What to do with the necks: Lacquered? sanded and sealed? oiled? painted? With my initial order from Oxford Guitar Supply I ordered a can of the Neck Amber lacquer. I have heard that some people don’t like the feel of a lacquered neck. I guess we’ll find out when I use the neck amber, maybe on the P-Bass.
Sanded and sealed is essentially how the Squier Sonic Series instruments come, and I will say, they feel really good just as they are. I’m sure you can go down in the sand paper grit and get the neck like glass.
I intend to paint the neck of the Les Paul with the same Nectarine lacquer as the body. I hear this makes the neck less “quick”, but I’m not that fast, so..
Oiling is something counterintuitive, I mean, who wants oily fingers when playing the guitar? But everything I’ve seen says it’s the best way to finish a neck. And the oil dries, so no sticky fingers. I am planning on using boiled linseed oil1 on the neck of the Benton Telecaster.
Once I get a feel for each method I can decide what to do to the other guitars.
